Removing the pain |
My Step-by-Step Guide
To create a website you need a Domain Name, a Host and a Platform to build it. You also need to manage the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) within the web-building platform. All these you can do yourself, but a good designer will communicate your message effectively, find creative solutions to present your brand and provide sound site navigation. I will walk you through this often overwhelming world with as little pain as possible. |
What's in a name? |
Domain Name
Your Domain Name, or your website address, is one of your business's most important assets in this digital age. Choosing the right name is important and shouldn't be too long or too obscure, as you want people to remember it, e.g. www.dogcatcher.com. I can help you brainstorm names if you're stuck. You can purchase it from a variety of sellers, or I can arrange it for you by opening an account in your name, so you always have ownership and access to your own account. You may already own a domain name. You will need to be able to contact your Registrar with instructions to point it to your new website. I can talk you through this. |

Hosting & Web-building Platforms
Your website needs to be 'Hosted' by a server somewhere in cyberspace. If you create your website in Wordpress you can choose where to host it. Some hosting sites are very cheap, but offer you little support or security. Most hosting sites also offer website builds, but design and are not transferable (well not easily without coding capacity). I use excellent web building platforms that incorporate the hosting into the fee for use, but they can't be moved to another hosting provider. I have found that the superior designs, developer support, security, upgrade fixes and general functionality make it a much better investment than Wordpress builds. The ease of use to edit your site also makes them very attractive. (I use Weebly and Squarespace). Although Wordpress can be hosted anywhere, they are prone to breaks and limited functionality, and you can end up having to pay a developer to clean up your coding. Just imagine an instruction manual written in Russian... you need an interpreter and they don't come cheap. |
